The Slimes and Crimes of Nestlé

How can we run an issue of “The Talking Stick”, especially one focussing on women, without highlighting some of the slimes and crimes of Nestlé and their global efforts to undermine women, breastfeeding and social justice generally.

Nestlé Schmoose Rejected by Mandela.

Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund rejected a donation from Nestlé, for the second time, in spite of Lord Richard Attenborough’s attempts to persuade Nelson Mandela to take half a million pounds.  “Given the Nestlé debacle in relation to HIV/Aids infected mothers and their campaign to promote formula milk as opposed to breast milk and the disadvantages they put out publicly regarding breastfeeding, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund declined the donation.”

Nestlé Limbo - How Low Can They Go?

Environmental pollution has serious health consequences, especially on children.  Tiny doses of harmful chemicals can have a dramatic effect on the developing child, damaging the immune and nervous systems.  The chemicals not only cross the placenta but are also found in breast-milk.

Nestlé’s response?  Just before World Breastfeeding Week this poster depicting a breast dripping oily, polluted fluid appeared all over France.  The poster was part sponsored by L’Oreal/ Nestlé.  Like their misleading confusions around HIV/Aids, Nestlé will go to extreme lengths to undermine breast-feeding and promote their own baby-milk substitutes – whatever the ethics or consequences.

From the Mouths of the Poor in Ethiopia

At a time when an estimated 11 million people were at serious risk of starvation in Ethiopia, Nestlé were trying to extract US$6 million from the struggling Ethiopian government.  The demand was for compensation for a privatisation 25 years ago – before Nestlé were even involved!

Nestlé - Recognition at Last

A survey by Ethical Consumer Magazine found Nestlé to be the ‘least ethical company’.  Sadly they were unable to collect their award.

For these and many other reasons African Initiatives’ continues to support the global boycott against Nestlé, now in 20 countries.  Once again thanks to our friends at Baby Milk Action for their dedicated information and campaigning.  For more go to: www.babymilkaction.org
