African Voices

African Voices Forum (AVF) is a Bristol-based network of African and African-Caribbean community associations/organisations, other community organisations working to empower Africans and African-Caribbeans to take active part in policies and initiatives that concern them, as well as other organisations that share and support the forum’s values, principles, and objectives. The AVF partnership input in the making of the African Voices in Schools DVD and Resource Pack is the first of a series of activities and projects lined up by the organisation to help provide a positive representation of Africa and challenge negative stereotypes and preconceptions about this largely misreported continent.

The African Voices DVD and Resource Pack is an African Initiatives publication brought to you in partnership with the DEA; European Union and the African Voices Forum.

Through the stories and experiences of members of the African Diaspora Communities in Bristol and Newcastle this resource aims to challenge young people’s perceptions of African countries and provide the opportunities to question the way in which we see our world.

Taking the ideas and stories in the film, African Initiatives has produced an innovative collection of interactive and cross curricular activities which can be used as discrete lessons or as part of a wider unit of work.

The African Voices Resource Pack is designed for use for young people from ages 7-16. The film and book are separated into three sections: Personally Speaking; Identity and Media: Values and Perceptions. Within each section interviewees are asked specific questions, all of which have corresponding activities. The African Voices Film is 30 minutes long and can be watched either in its entirety; the 3 sections or question segments. African Initiatives hopes that you and your classes will gain as much from using the pack as we have from developing it.

Please contact the Dev Ed team if you are interested in a workshop led by African Initiatives and/or African Voices or if you would like a copy of the African Voices DVD and Resource Pack.
