Development Education |
|||
African Initiatives is working to increase understanding of the causes of poverty and injustice by bringing Africa into the curriculum in UK schools and youth groups and raising awareness in the public and media. Our belief is that young people today shouldn’t have negative stereotypes of the developing world and we aim to confront these through promoting educational awareness. Development Education equips people with the knowledge and skills to be active, informed and responsible citizens and to understand their links with the wider world. “The more awareness we have the more we can give Africa a chance. It’s important for us to realize we are all the same; we are all human beings” It is not just British children who benefit. “Teaching in an inner city school, where the majority of children(‘s) families do not come from the UK, Global Education offers a view of the world where the experiences of their families are reflected. It is obviously essential that countries and communities are not cast into the role of victim, but presented positively. Global Citizenship broadens experience from a narrow Eurocentric view to a world view, increasing understanding and respect for difference.” African Initiatives works with teachers giving them advice and resources from our Global Resource Centre to improve their teaching of Global Citizenship. We work with over 50 teachers, local authorities and local and regional education networks to help improve Development Education. We also work with the public and the media to provide resources and run workshops, conferences and other events on Africa and wider global justice and environmental issues. We believe that, with this knowledge and accompanying skills, people in the UK will become advocates for bringing justice to Africa. |
